The Bruce Highway is important to North Queenslanders but, unfortunately, we have had 20 years of a hard Labor Government in Queensland who were flat out finding the Bruce Highway on a map. Queensland Labor fumbled the ball on the Bruce Highway because it didn't understand what the problem was and it refused to raise the necessary funds through increased royalties because that would upset their counterparts in the failed Gillard Labor Federal Government.
The Liberal National Coalition is committed to making a difference in regional Queensland, including a real “Royalties for Regions” program that will address infrastructure needs of mining regions, including Mackay and Townsville. More importantly, the Liberal National Party and Campbell Newman committed to spending $1 billion on the Bruce Highway before they were elected to government. In the past, we have seen funding based on an 80-20 basis, with the federal government committing 80 per cent of the funds and the State committing 20 per cent. If the Federal Government is forthcoming, as it should be, in the upcoming budget, we will see an additional $4 billion to work on trouble spots.
But fixing the Bruce is not just about throwing money at it.
We must identify exactly what the problems are and how much it will cost to fix them first. Then we can make decisions on how to get the best results for the money we have.
That's where you come in.
I want you, the people who live around the Bruce Highway and use it everyday, to help detail what needs to be done.
· Tell us how flooding impacts your way of life
· Tell us where the Bruce Highway is unsafe
· Tell us where potholes need urgent attention
Add your comment on the campagin here so I can stand up for North Queensland. I have been pushing for improvements to the Bruce Highway since being elected in 2010 and below are some of the examples where your Bruce Highway concerns have been taken to parliament – including my maiden speech.
In the next week or so, we will have a brand new Fix the Bruce website, allowing better interaction for you to show us and tell us where the problems are.
